How the math works

An expectation, not a promise

RTP — return to player — is the share of total stakes a game pays back over a very large number of spins. A 96% RTP slot keeps, on average, 4 cents of every euro staked. Multiply that by how much money passes through the machine in an hour — stake times spins — and you get the expected cost of the hour.

The word doing the work is "expected". No single hour behaves like the average: variance means most sessions finish somewhere else entirely — many a little worse, a few much better. The expected cost is not what will happen to you tonight; it is the price the average converges to the longer you play.

Two honest uses for this number: comparing games (a 91% RTP slot costs more than double a 96% one at the same pace), and budgeting (if the expected cost of your usual evening exceeds what you would happily pay for entertainment, change the stake, the pace, or the game).
