How to choose a safe online casino

Six checks that take ten minutes and filter out most bad operators

Most casino reviews tell you what a site looks like. Almost none tell you what to verify before you deposit. This is the six-point check we run on every brand before it appears on this site — you can run the same one yourself in about ten minutes.

1. Find the licence, then check the tier

Every legitimate casino names its regulator and licence number in the footer. No number, no deposit — that rule alone filters out most rogue operators. Tiers matter too: the UK Gambling Commission, Malta Gaming Authority, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man audit operators continuously and handle player complaints. Curaçao and Anjouan licences are legal cover, but their dispute processes are weaker — treat those casinos with more caution, smaller deposits and earlier withdrawals.

2. Read the withdrawal terms before the bonus terms

The page that matters is not the promotions page. Look for three numbers: minimum withdrawal, weekly or monthly cap, and processing time. A €4,000 weekly cap is workable; a €500 one means a meaningful win takes months to collect. Processing "within 1–3 business days" is normal; "up to 14 days pending verification" is a warning.

3. Check who makes the games

Slots from NetEnt, Pragmatic Play, Play'n GO, Hacksaw or Evolution run on the provider's servers, not the casino's — the operator cannot alter their outcomes. A lobby full of studios you have never heard of, with no provider logos or demo mode, deserves skepticism. Live dealer tables from Evolution or Ezugi are a good sign: those studios vet their partner casinos.

4. Verify KYC expectations up front

Every licensed casino must verify identity. The difference is when. Good operators verify at registration or first deposit. Problem operators accept deposits instantly and only start asking for documents when you try to withdraw — that sequencing is the single most common complaint pattern in player forums.

5. Test support before you need it

Open the live chat and ask something specific: "what is the withdrawal cap for my country?" A real agent answering in minutes with a concrete number is worth more than any badge on the homepage. A bot loop, or a chat that only exists for logged-in depositors, tells you what post-deposit service will look like.

6. Look for limits and self-exclusion tools

Deposit limits, loss limits, timeout and self-exclusion in the account settings are a regulatory requirement in serious jurisdictions — and a sign the operator plans to be around long enough for compliance to matter. Their complete absence usually accompanies the weakest licences.

The red flags that end the conversation

No licence number anywhere. Bonus terms that can void winnings for "irregular play" without defining it. Withdrawal caps under €1,000 a month. Support that cannot name its own regulator. Any one of these is enough — there are too many properly run casinos to spend money finding out how a badly run one handles your balance.
